Today, I woke up with a really intense dizzy spell.  I’ve experienced this sensation before only to find myself waking up collapsed on the floor.  Fortunately I didn’t experience my syncopic episode.  What’s weird is this is the first time feeling this for over 4 hours.  I didn’t drink last night or the rest of this week for that matter.  It feels like I’m on the heavier side of being buzzed.  If a police officer pulled me over on my way to work today to conduct a DIY test, I would pass the breathalizer test but probably fail walking straight.  Maybe also the alphabet backwards haha.  That’s how bad it was.  After a few glasses of water, some yogurt, turkey and time I feel a little bit better but not much.  Enough about my condition.  Let’s all be happy the weekend’s here and, for us Winnipegers, nice weather along the way.  I’m sure a few of you are going to converse over a pint or two of beer (not beers and not fishes either) and get your dizzy spell on.  Here’s an Aussie 6 part series about beer I’m currently watching.  It’s quite enjoyable so enjoy!

The weather last Saturday was beeeeee-au-ti-ful!  Who can complain with +2 degrees celsius?  Well, it was nice in the morning.  My apartment has a balcony that overlooks the river and after seeing people having fun skating along, I figure I’d to go ice skating one of these days.  Who else wants to come?  Unfortunately, no one until last Saturday!

My first memories of going ice skating is ironically in the Philippines years ago.  “A filipino ice skating in the Philippines?” you ask.  Yes, at Mega Mall.  Again, I will say years ago and I must stress on the word years.  I figured ice skating would be a breeze.  Well, not quite but simple enough for me to take my camera along so I can kill two stones with one low fat diet (you know what I mean!).  Boy was I wrong!  I was skating very cautiously to protect my camera from my big ol’ bum.  My skating ablities were probably worse than a 4 year old.  I needed a walker!  Well, maybe not that bad but maybe that bad.

Anyway, last summer YouTube cured my case with my swimless ability.  I can now officially say I can swim!  Thanks, YouTube!  Just don’t ask me to save someone if they were drowning.  Yes, I had a test run with a friend and I couldn’t save her haha.  So if YouTube helped me then I’m sure he can help me now!  Without further ado (I had to look that one up.  I thought it was adieu.  Could still be adieu.  The internet sometimes isn’t a very reliable place.) my YouTube Skating Class 101.

This is a series of 9 ice skating lessons for beginners.  The reason why I chose this video is because I initially found it a little funny but I still soaked in everything he was pointing out.  The first lesson is how to skate.  I was like, “So the left foot moves are called steps and the right foot moves are called skates.”  Very descriptive hahaha.  I know I’m being a bastard and I’m sure he can be much more descriptive in Hungarian but it was a little funny.  I’m sure my intro ice skating video in Hungarian would be worse.  I’m sure I’d get tons of hilarious looks if people saw me slowly going down the river crouching and standing (one of the exercises).  If you do see me doing these exercises though, don’t laugh.  That’s the way my buddy does it in Budapest!

So many people have been wanting to get a macbook. This clip is for those people. Kind of late. I know.  Introducing the MacBook Wheel.  Apple’s new product.

I love watching documentaries, Discovery channel and anything else that shows you what happens behind the scenes.  Here’s a video showing how Canon EF 500mm F4L IS USM lens are made.  Reminds me of How It’s Made.  Enjoy!

Yesterday, I’m pretty sure most of the world was watching their newsbox.  Many are truly inspired by the events happening just a little south us.  I happened to catch a glimpse of of Obama’s inauguration celebration on CNN during work (while setting up a coworker’s wireless connection).  While an incalculacable (Michael Scott) amount of people were watching from inside there were plenty of people standing in attendance outside.  They look like one badass swarm of insects you wouldn’t want crawling on your skin. I only caught the part where Obama is walking down the street with his wife waving to the crowds.  For some reason I was hoping nothing bad was going to happen to him and I’m sure I wasn’t alone on that idea.  With that many people in attendance, there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing a bunch of inauguration content uploaded on Facebook, Vimeo, Youtube, Flickr and every other sharing sites.  We might even see some viral video of something quirky CNN didn’t get to cover which gets cut up and remixed.   After I was done configuring the wireless network on the laptop I tested the connection by loading up CNN’s website.  They had up to date photos of the event refreshing every few minutes.  While I’m sure everyone else in the room was thinking of better things, I just happened to wonder how intense it was for photographers to get a good shot and how their workflow was to submit these photos as fast as they can.  Just a thought.

In case you haven’t gotten enough images from the inauguration coverage online or on tv here are a few flickr groups.

There’s word on the grapevine that Winnipeg drivers aren’t the best around.  In fact, I was recently in a cab talking about it with the cab driver and someone drove through a red light!  Winnipeg’s winter doesn’t help any either.  People don’t seen to take ice into consideration so instead of leaving 5 – 10 minutes earlier I see a traffic light on the ground or worse.  A few weekends ago I could have been a witness to 4 accidents in one trip, one of which could have been into me.  Don’t even get me started with more people using their smartphones to…oh nevermind.  I have a blackberry.  Let’s just leave it at that.

In any case, driving can leave you feeling a little deflated or frustrated.  Here’s a tip to shave a 5 – 10 minutes off your route if you’re planning on heading south on Osborne during heavy traffic.  While you’re heading down Memorial Blvd. (yes, it turns into Osborne and, yes, was previously Colony St. and, yes, was previously Balmoral St. and, yes, was previously Isabel St. and, yes, was previously Salter St.  Geez Louise!  6 names for one street within a 2.7km distance!) take furthest right lane.  I know all of you are thinking, “but I might get a ticket if I head straight on a right turn only lane like all the other bozos.”  Well, today, instead of fighting against the traffic rules we are going to follow them.  This will lead you to take a right on St. Mary’s Ave.  You will immediately be taking a left on Colony St. (yes, you were just on Colony St. but it changed to Memorial Blvd.) and instead of taking a left on York Ave. to get back onto Osborne (which was just Memorial Blvd.) you’re going to keep heading straight until you reach Broadway.  Instead of taking a left, you’re going to be taking a right.  Your minds are somewhat perplexed by this counterintuative move.  Have faith.  When you take a right on Broadway, take the left lane because you will be approaching a left turn light on Balmoral St. (no need for further confusion).  If you’re still with me you must be thinking, “where the heck is this going to lead us?”  To answer your question, lets head off in a tangent for a second.  Let’s assume you took Osborne St. all the way to the bridge.  Now you remember where they installed a traffic camera just before the bridge?  Yeah, and remember where cars come to yield into the bridge?  Yeah, that’s where you’re headed.  So back to the directions.  You should be heading south on Balmoral St. after turning left from Broadway.  Further down Balmoral St. you can take a left on Mostyn St.  Mostyn is where the those cars yield onto Osborne just before the bridge.  You don’t have to wait too long here to merge.  So that’s my tip of the day and it should shave off 5 – 10 minutes off of your cycle of brake and gas.  Now I know I’ve made it a tad confusing with added comments so here’s a visual aid for those of you who hate reading my writing.  Please supply any feedback if you’ve attempted this route. If you even have your own traffic tip to share, feel free to post below. Thanks and enjoy!
